The 2018 Leinster Orienteering Championships, hosted by Ajax Orienteering Club, will take place on February 25th, 2018, in the Vale of Clara Nature Reserve and Ballinastraw forest near Rathdrum, County Wicklow.

We are looking forward to what promises to be a technically challenging event on a new map drawn to the new International Specification for Orienteering Maps (ISOM) 2017.

The area has a long association with Irish orienteering, including being the main part of the map that was used for the 1987 World Military Orienteering Championships.

Note: as a condition of our permit to use the nature reserve for orienteering we cannot accept more than 200 entries. We have already received those 200 entries – this event is now full and entries are closed.

Organiser: Paul Smyth, Ajax
Planner: Aonghus O’Cleirigh, Ajax
Controller: Pat Healy, CNOC

This event is an important one in the Junior International Squad’s 2018 calendar as it’s the first qualification race for all 4 major junior and student competitions this year:

  • European Youth Orienteering Championships
  • Junior World Orienteering Championships
  • World University Orienteering Championships
  • Junior Home International

Visit the Irish Orienteering Junior and Student Orienteering blog to follow their progress.

This event is also a selection race for the 2018 Senior Home International (PDF) in England in September 2018.

AJAX would like to thank the National Parks and Wildlife Service, the Wicklow GAA Centre of Excellence and Coillte for permission to use the event areas and for the use of their facilities.
